The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has introduced a new rule requiring all under-construction buildings across the city to display project information boards featuring essential details. This step is designed to enhance transparency in real estate activities and safeguard the interests of potential buyers. As per the directive, developers must prominently exhibit the sanctioned building plan number, the name of the architect or licensed building surveyor (LBS), and the building’s height. These boards should be positioned in a clearly visible spot to ensure easy viewing from a distance.
The directive was issued based on instructions from the mayor’s office and is aimed at addressing construction-related violations—particularly deviations from approved plans—that have previously led to legal and financial troubles for unaware buyers. Such issues often come to light only when the KMC halts construction through a stop-work order, leaving buyers uncertain. The mandatory signage seeks to create greater accountability and protect consumer interests.
To implement this directive, engineers from building departments at the borough level have been asked to carry out detailed inspections of buildings that are under construction or nearly complete. Their job is to check for compliance with the signage rule. Any building lacking the required display board will be reported, and a stop-work notice will be issued to the developer. KMC officials believe this preventive measure will build buyer confidence and improve public trust in Kolkata’s real estate sector.
