  • Description:

The entrance to Shawarma Kingdom, a stunning rooftop café in the bustling New Market area of Esplanade, is a mesmerizing blend of elegance and greenery. A gracefully arched glass canopy, adorned with cascading vines, filters in soft daylight, creating a warm and inviting ambiance. The café’s name, "Shawarma Kingdom," is proudly displayed on a stylish signboard, accompanied by its logo that adds a touch of whimsy. Adjacent to the entrance, tastefully designed wooden restroom doors feature minimalist yet classy signage.

The entrance to the café is defined by its intricate wrought iron detailing, inspired by classical Middle Eastern and Victorian-era designs, creating a welcoming yet grand first impression. The pathway leading inside is adorned with floral arrangements and bordered by beautifully patterned tiles, guiding visitors into the space. The ceiling features warm wooden panels illuminated by a string of delicate, ambient lights, adding a sense of elegance and charm.

One of the most striking features is the artwork along the partition walls, a visual narrative crafted by the architects to depict the journey of Middle Eastern flavors as they integrate into Kolkata’s vibrant street food culture. The murals blend iconic landmarks from both regions—Ottoman domes and minarets merge with the bustling tramways and colonial architecture of Kolkata, symbolizing the fusion of two culinary traditions.

Additionally, the use of clear glass as a partition ensures an unobstructed view into the kitchen, allowing patrons to witness the artistry of food preparation firsthand. This transparency enhances the dining experience, reinforcing the café’s commitment to authenticity and craftsmanship.

The café’s architectural design beautifully merges traditional craftsmanship with contemporary aesthetics. The ceiling is a standout feature, inspired by the Madur Kathi mats of rural Bengal, known for their intricate weaving and natural texture. This design choice creates a warm, earthy ambiance while also evoking the rich textile heritage of the region. The radial arrangement of the ceiling elements bears a striking resemblance to the ornate carpets found in Middle Eastern culture, adding a touch of exotic elegance. The space is further accentuated by decorative wrought iron panels that frame the open-air sections, allowing for an inviting yet intimate atmosphere. The seating, a mix of counter and table arrangements, is complemented by vibrant green chairs that contrast beautifully against the neutral terrazzo flooring. The lighting combines modern chandeliers and woven pendant lamps, blending old-world charm with contemporary functionality, making the café a visually compelling and culturally immersive space.

The second sitting area of the café is designed with a blend of traditional Bengali aesthetics and modern functionality. The ceiling is adorned with woven jhuri baskets, commonly used in Bengali households, arranged in a layered pattern, creating a warm and textured ambiance. These basket-like structures house hanging light fixtures, which cast a soft, diffused glow, enhancing the cozy atmosphere. The walls feature a deep terracotta hue, accented with intricate white hand-painted motifs that echo traditional Bengali alpana art. Large arched windows, framed with black metalwork, display vintage cityscapes, adding a nostalgic charm. The seating arrangement consists of contemporary black and tan chairs paired with light wooden tables, ensuring comfort while maintaining the space's earthy aesthetic. Greenery is incorporated through potted plants and vertical garden panels, softening the architectural elements and bringing a refreshing touch of nature to the interiors.
